The North West Passage

From Gander, (CYQX) to Prudhoe Bay (PASC)

H.M.S. Intrepid trapped in pack ice

H.M.S. Intrepid, under the command of Irish explorer Sir Francis Leopold McClintock, is trapped in pack ice in Baffin Bay, circa 1853. McClintock is on his first mission to find the 1845 expedition of Sir John Franklin, which disappeared during a search for the Northwest Passage. From a sketch by Commander May R.N. For Centuries, Explorers sought an ice-free route to Asia. A thawed Arctic meant Shippers could cut Transportation costs dramatically. Now for the first time ever, it is said that due to global warming the NW passage is now free of Ice. In early spring, DC-3 Airways has been chartered to carry out a Survey from Gander, Newfoundland to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to ensure that this portion of the NW Passage is free of ice and can be opened to shipping.
